If you collect Magic: The Gathering, you know the problem: Somewhere in those boxes is a card that's now worth $50. But which one was it? And in which binder?
For over 30 years, new Magic sets have been released. That's thousands of cards, hundreds of variants, and prices that constantly fluctuate. Without a system, it gets chaotic.
Magic collections have unique complexity:
Massive Card Count: An average player has 5,000-20,000 cards. Hardcore collectors significantly more.
Variants Upon Variants: The same card exists as Regular, Foil, Extended Art, Borderless, Showcase, Retro Frame, Serialized... and those are just the newer sets.
Price Volatility: A card can suddenly jump from $2 to $30 due to a new deck โ or the other way around.
Condition Matters: For valuable cards, Near Mint vs. Lightly Played makes a significant price difference.
Most people start with Excel or Google Sheets. This works... until it doesn't:
Apps like Moxfield or Archidekt are great for decks but not for collections. They're optimized for players, not collectors.
Works until your first reorganization. Or until someone else needs to find a card.
A modern solution should:
Kollekto supports Trading Card Games โ and Magic is one of the most important.
What you get:
Divide your collection into:
RL cards will never be reprinted and increase long-term. These should ALWAYS be logged โ with condition and purchase price.
After a prerelease or draft night: Sort and log immediately. Otherwise everything ends up in the "Pile of Shame" and never gets entered.
Foil prices often develop differently than regular. Especially for Commander staples, foils can appreciate disproportionately.
A ritual for serious collectors:
Monthly: Check your top 20 cards by value. Has anything changed?
Quarterly: Scroll through your entire collection. Are there "forgotten" cards that have since risen?
Before Selling: Check price history. Is the current price a high or low point?
Magic collections are too complex for memory or spreadsheets. A digital system saves time, prevents values from being overlooked, and makes collecting more relaxed overall.
Whether you have 500 or 50,000 cards โ a good tracking system is the foundation.
